Born in Milan on 19/02/1968, I graduated from the Liceo Ginnasio Statale G. Parini in Milan in 1987. Despite my humanistic training, I was intrigued by reading some classics of scientific literature and I started to get passionate about biology deciding to continue my studies by enrolling in the Faculty of Biological Sciences at the University of Milan. Here, on 14/10/1993, I graduated with full marks in Biological Sciences with a thesis entitled: "In Saccaromyces cerevisiae the release of periplasmic proteins in the culture medium is altered in wall mutants and is influenced by a sequence specific amino acid ". I had the opportunity to carry out my thesis at the Division of Comparative Biochemistry, acquiring the fundamental techniques of molecular biology and biochemistry. In 1994 I started working as a fellow (later co.co.co and contractor) at the C. Besta Neurological Institute, at the division of Medical Genetics and Neurogenetics, where I still work as a Health Researcher.

Research activity

My activity is mainly aimed at research in the field of metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases: ß-oxidation defects, leukoencephalopathies, hereditary neuropathies and spastic paraparesis and thus I also contribute to the diagnosis of these diseases. In carrying out these activities, in addition to the more classic techniques (PCR, RT-PCR, MLPA, Western Blot, Sanger sequencing, microsatellite analysis), I had the need to acquire more innovative molecular biology methods: Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), analysis of the data obtained through NGS and use of different computer programs for the annotation and interpretation of the variants identified.

Topics of interest

  • Leukoencephalopathy
  • Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (CMT)
  • Hereditary spastic paraplegia
